French, 1842-1923 was an orientalist French painter and sculptor. He was Charles Gleyre's and Jean-Leon Gerôme's pupil. Maria Christina Röhl, född i Stockholm den 26 juli 1801, död i Klara församling, Stockholm den 5 juli 1875, var en svensk porträttmålare som avbildade ett flertal samtida kända personer. Medlem i konstakademien (1843) och hovleverantör. Hennes tavlor hänger bland annat på Nationalmuseum i Stockholm. En samling av 1800 porträtt finns på Kungliga Biblioteket. Maria Röhl växte upp i en rik familj, men då hon blev föräldralös 1822 drabbades hon av fattigdom. Hon tänkte först bli guvernant, men professorn och kopparstickaren Christian Forsell undervisade henne då i teckning; hon hade redan tidigare undervisats av målaren Alexander Hambr??, och fick nu lära sig att utföra snabba och realistiska porträtt i blyerts; hon arbetade i blyerts och krita i svartvitt. Hon bodde hos familjen Forsell, där hon först avbildade familjens vänner och sedan, då det hade blivit modernt att låta avbilda sig av "mamsell Röhl", försörjde hon sig på detta i trettio år. Hon utnämndes till kunglig hovmålare 1843, studerade 1843-1846 under Leon Cogniet vid Franska konstakademien i Paris och hade sedan en atelj?? i Brunkebergs hotell i Stockholm. Fotografikonsten blev en svår konkurrent under hennes sista år. Även systern Eva Röhl (1810-96) uppges ha haft viss konstärlig begåvning.
Carlo Innocenzo Carlone
(1686-1775) was an Italian painter and engraver, active especially in Germany. He was a native of Scaria, near Como, in Lombardy, but may have been from the Carloni family of Genoese painters. He was the son of a sculptor, but he preferred painting, and was placed under the care of Giulio Quaglio. He afterwards studied at Venice and at Rome, until he was 23 years of age, when he visited Germany, where he has left works in oil and in fresco at Ludwigsburg, Passau, Linz, Breslau, Prague, and Vienna. He painted large decorative fresco cycles for palaces in Vienna, Prague and Southern Germany. For example, Carlone is known for painting the ceiling images in the Upper Belvedere of the Belvedere palace complex. His The Glorification of Saints Felix and Adauctus (1759-61) was commissioned for the cupola of the church of San Felice del Benaco on Lake Garda. He died at Como.
VASARI, Giorgio
Italian Mannerist Writer and Painter, 1511-1574 Italian painter, architect, and writer. Though he was a prolific painter in the Mannerist style, he is more highly regarded as an architect (he designed the Uffizi Palace, now the Uffizi Gallery), but even his architecture is overshadowed by his writings. His Lives of the Most Eminent Architects, Painters, and Sculptors (1550) offers biographies of early to late Renaissance artists. His style is eminently readable and his material is well researched, though when facts were scarce he did not hesitate to fill in the gaps. In his view, Giotto had revived the art of true representation after its decline in the early Middle Ages, and succeeding artists had brought that art progressively closer to the perfection achieved by Michelangelo.
